What we do

— Help for Accessible Design (Barrier-free Design)

Do you need a less physically challenging home for you or the folks?

Ramps and grab-bars are a big help to a physically challenged person—but if you’ve ever been in a wheel chair or had an eye disability or similar, you know that grab bars & ramps are no help in allowing you independence in the kitchen, garage, etc. Using our home state of Colorado (similar to other United States), seniors (classified as sixty-plus years old) prefer to live in their own home—yet 58% of them have one or more disabilities, such as difficulty reaching, bending, stooping, standing, sitting, and lifting. Disabilities double as they continue to age.

To make matters worse, 74% of their homes are 40+ years old, and another 17% are 30+ years old. Homes of these ages were never planned with Universal/Accessible Design in mind. Even today, few homes have such features. Yet protecting the safety of our physically challenged, can encompass features only costing a few hundred or less, if a costly complete redesign cannot be done.

For Karl, we suggested simply replacing the yellowed lampshades with white, so he could get more light to see better.

For Robin, a partial kitchen redo costing a few thousand dollars, allowed her complete independence in the kitchen—without sacrificing the needs of other family members.

If you have a loved one with physical challenges, please give us a call. We’ve been there ourselves, and we’d love to help.
